Having your new born baby’s hearing tested
may prevent long-term damage…

If a baby’s hearing is not tested soon after birth, a hearing loss may be missed for months or even years, while the child misses out on valuable information in their everyday environment.

Conducting a baby hearing test soon after birth may change your child’s life

Hearing is a very important aspect of a child’s development and a hearing loss can cause long-term problems with speech and language development, social development and functioning in educational environments. 3 out of every 1 000 babies are born with hearing loss. If detected early, a baby can get the necessary help by 6 months of age, enabling them to overcome these obstacles to lead a normal life.

If a baby’s hearing is not tested soon after birth, a hearing loss may be missed for months or even years, while the child misses out on valuable information in their everyday environment. Dr Tanja Beeton offers professional hearing tests for babies and can also assist with the steps to follow should a hearing impairment be detected.

How does the screen work?

We aim to cause the least amount of discomfort to the mother or baby during this screening. An audiologist will come to your room in the maternity ward to offer you a screening while you are in the hospital. You can choose whether you want the screening to take place in hospital, or to rather make an appointment at our offices.

We make use of technology called otoacoustic emissions (OAE) to emit sounds, and if the baby’s cochlea (hearing organ) is normal, we can measure the sounds that the cochlea sends in response. The screen takes only 2 -5 minutes, and will not harm or cause discomfort to your baby.

Why do we offer the screening in hospital?

There are so many things for you to take care of with the arrival of a new born baby. Offering this service in the hospital means that there is one less thing to worry about! Other reasons include the fact that the baby is peaceful and often sleeping (this means that the test procedure is easier and less likely to need a return appointment), and in-hospital medical aid benefits.

Why do we offer the screening in hospital?

A ‘refer’ result means that we need to retest your baby’s hearing on a different occasion. This is usually scheduled 2 – 4 weeks from the initial test date. Reasons for a retest include fluid (vernix) in the ear canal, the baby being restless, or the possible detection of a hearing loss.
