HEAR THE DIFFERENCE
Conducting a baby hearing test soon after birth may change your child’s life
If a baby’s hearing is not tested soon after birth, a hearing loss may be missed for months or even years, while the child misses out on valuable information in their everyday environment. Dr Tanja Beeton offers professional hearing tests for babies and can also assist with the steps to follow should a hearing impairment be detected.
How does the screen work?
We make use of technology called otoacoustic emissions (OAE) to emit sounds, and if the baby’s cochlea (hearing organ) is normal, we can measure the sounds that the cochlea sends in response. The screen takes only 2 -5 minutes, and will not harm or cause discomfort to your baby.

Why do we offer the screening in hospital?
Why do we offer the screening in hospital?
A ‘refer’ result means that we need to retest your baby’s hearing on a different occasion. This is usually scheduled 2 – 4 weeks from the initial test date. Reasons for a retest include fluid (vernix) in the ear canal, the baby being restless, or the possible detection of a hearing loss.
